Thursday, April 29, 2004 Bush Campaign Lies quotes Vice-President Cheney in his presentation at Westminster College.At a Florida fundraiser in March, Kerry was misquoted as saying 'I've met foreign leaders who can't go out and say it all publicly, but boy, they look at you and say, you gotta win this, you gotta beat this guy, we need a new policy . . . .' The error was corrected very quickly; he actually said 'I've met more leaders who . . . .' But that didn't stop Dick Cheney from telling an audience at Westminster College [on April 26] that Kerry had really made the claim about 'foreign leaders' . . . I read the text of Cheney's speech on the Bush-Cheney website, and it's peppered with numerous indicators of applause. But apparently not everyone was as enthusiastic as the transcript would suggest. The president of Westminster College reacted with this email to the students:I would like to thank each and every one of you who were so courteous and respectful to Mr. Cheney during his visit and speech. Frankly, I must admit that I was surprised and disappointed that Mr. Cheney chose to step off the high ground and resort to Kerry-bashing for a large portion of his speech. The content and tone of his speech was not provided to us prior to the event - we had only been told the speech would be about foreign policy, including issues in Iraq. Nevertheless, I was extremely proud of the students, staff, and faculty who represented the College so well during the organization of the visit and during the speech itself -- inside and outside of the gym.One might expect a college president to be less naive than this gentleman appears to have been, but he proved himself a gentleman in fact by apologizing for his guest's behavior. I'm not sure why Americans decided that televised drama was better than the real thing, that cardboard microwave food containers were an adequate substitute for real dishes, and their contents for real food, or that cooking, dishwashing and face-to-face conversation wasn't worth the effort and time it required. Someone fed this nation a plastic crate of out-of-season tomatoes and told us it was life and we took them at their word, and we're so much the poorer for it that it's hard to know where to start to list the shortcomings." I wrote this a couple of years ago, but I have to admit it's much less amusing than I thought it would be to see the artifical construct falling apart. WHY 'LIFE AS A SPECTATOR SPORT'
