No one gave me a hard time about it, though, and one store owner grinned and reminded me that I had come on Sunday the last time I was there. I was surprised that he remembered me at all, much less what day it had been. "We had a pickup load of fresh corn in here," he recalled, "and we was all sitting around husking it." His daughter had still been in high school then. Now she is managing the store, a friendly, pretty girl who greeted everyone by name. This sort of place is the reward I get for the less pleasant encounters I sometimes have, and I drove home, before dark for once, after a long, but productive day. My emotional rant of a couple of days ago was more a matter of blowing off steam than any real political commentary (though Daniel at Now Entering Laboville was kind enough to quote part of it). I'm hoping, without much real assurance, that the persistent lying of the Bush administration may finally be coming back to bite them. I haven't read Calpundit for a while (and in fact, Kevin has moved to his new blog now at the Washington Monthly), but in skimming back over the last entries on Calpundit, I came across this remark on March 15:Wolf Blitzer asked Donald Rumsfeld last night if we should have given the UN inspectors more time. Rumsfeld answered, "Well, the U.N. inspectors were not in there. The U.N. inspectors were out." Huh? Can't these guys even be bothered to make up decent lies anymore? They were only out because we told them to leave so that we could start the war.As our mothers all told us, the problem with lying is that you forget what you said. Then you have to make up something else to cover the first lie. Pretty soon you're in deep doo-doo. I think the Bush White House is at the point of tracking in the smelly stuff. I'm not sure why Americans decided that televised drama was better than the real thing, that cardboard microwave food containers were an adequate substitute for real dishes, and their contents for real food, or that cooking, dishwashing and face-to-face conversation wasn't worth the effort and time it required. Someone fed this nation a plastic crate of out-of-season tomatoes and told us it was life and we took them at their word, and we're so much the poorer for it that it's hard to know where to start to list the shortcomings." I wrote this a couple of years ago, but I have to admit it's much less amusing than I thought it would be to see the artifical construct falling apart.
