From Atrios, news that a group calling itself Move America Forward is trying to stop theater owners from showing Michael Moore's film, Fahrenheit 9/11. Orcinus reports that some theater owners have received death threats. The 'Move America Forward' website was registered to Russo, Marsh and Rogers, a PR firm in Sacramento CA. Since the first wave of publicity about the website started making the rounds, they have changed the registration information so their name no longer appears. But What Really Happened was too quick for them, and got it all before it disappeared. Sal Russo, by the way, one of the principals in Russo, Marsh and Rugers, was an advisor in the 'Recall Gray Davis' campaign. Ron Rogers, another principal, worked on the gubernatorial campaign of Bill Simoon. GOP heavyweights, both of them. I hesitate to accuse the national Republican Party of having any hand in this, but one assumes they at least did not disapprove. I amused myself at the Move America Forward website by sending an email to every one of the theatre companies they listed, commending them for their plan to show the movie, or urging them to show it if they had not already decided to do so. I'm not sure why Americans decided that televised drama was better than the real thing, that cardboard microwave food containers were an adequate substitute for real dishes, and their contents for real food, or that cooking, dishwashing and face-to-face conversation wasn't worth the effort and time it required. Someone fed this nation a plastic crate of out-of-season tomatoes and told us it was life and we took them at their word, and we're so much the poorer for it that it's hard to know where to start to list the shortcomings." I wrote this a couple of years ago, but I have to admit it's much less amusing than I thought it would be to see the artifical construct falling apart.
