Saturday, June 26, 2004 Saving our conservative Christian values Because I live so close to the state border, my television stations are in North Carolina instead of Virginia. I've been watching the campaign ads from Ed Broyhill (of the Broyhill Furniture family), running for Congress in NC's 5th Congressional District. He has been far to the right from the very start, but his early ads were mostly good ol' country boy generalities (sad glances around a once thriving manufacturing-based community whose jobs have now gone overseas, and promises to create new jobs). Recently, however, he has gotten much more pointed and specific. The ad that ran this morning on WXII, Channel 12 in Winston-Salem, featured Broyhill repeating what he says on his website:I believe: •in the right of the unborn, the right to pray in school and the right to worship as we wish without government interference. •it is our duty to uphold and defend our Constitution. I support Second Amendment rights to keep and bear arms. •in supporting a limited federal government and a free enterprise system that encourages economic growth. •we must fight and win the war against terrorism. I will stand firm with President Bush to win the war against terrorism. He ended with, "I will work in Congress to preserve our conservative Christian values." What a sad day we've come to in this country that a candidate could run for national office on the appeal of preserving the "values" of one particular religious point of view. Why, gosh, you might almost think this was Northern Ireland. Or India. Or one of them other places where the infidel has to be driven out, and true believers installed in power. I'm not sure why Americans decided that televised drama was better than the real thing, that cardboard microwave food containers were an adequate substitute for real dishes, and their contents for real food, or that cooking, dishwashing and face-to-face conversation wasn't worth the effort and time it required. Someone fed this nation a plastic crate of out-of-season tomatoes and told us it was life and we took them at their word, and we're so much the poorer for it that it's hard to know where to start to list the shortcomings." I wrote this a couple of years ago, but I have to admit it's much less amusing than I thought it would be to see the artifical construct falling apart.
