"I don't want to impeach judges! I want to impale them!"

This insanity called "constitutional reform" is worse than I thought. Thanks to Lex for pointing me to this article in The Nation.

I was criticized in a private email for saying that speakers at the "Confronting the Judicial War on Faith" conference held in Washington DC last week favored "the impeachment of judges with different religious beliefs than [their] own." That conclusion seemed pretty clear to me, but it turns out that this sentiment was explicitly stated.
The threatening tenor of the conference speakers was a calculated tactic. As Gary Cass, the director of Rev. D. James Kennedy's lobbying front, the Center for Reclaiming America, explained, they are arousing the anger of their base in order to harness it politically. The rising tide of threats against judges "is understandable," Cass told me, "but we have to take the opportunity to channel that into a constitutional solution."

Cass's "solution" is the "Constitution Restoration Act," a bill relentlessly promoted during the conference that authorizes Congress to impeach judges who fail to abide by "the standard of good behavior" required by the Constitution. If they refuse to acknowledge "God as the sovereign source of law, liberty, or government," or rely in any way on international law in their rulings, judges also invite impeachment. In essence, the bill would turn judges' gavels into mere instruments of "The Hammer," Tom DeLay, and Christian-right cadres.
May I quote that again? If they refuse to acknowledge "God as the sovereign source of law, liberty, or government," judges also invite impeachment. Ignoring for the moment Jesus' explicit dissociation of himself and God with civil law, which should settle the argument even for Christians, does that mean no agnostic, no atheist, no Buddhist, no Muslim, could be appointed a judge? You bet it does! Think theocracy will never come to America? It's already on the way.

I said once that homosexuals were the Jews of the current generation. I was wrong, for the moment at least. That spotlight is now focused on the judiciary. Americans read, with patriotic disgust, of judges being assassinated in South American countries for simply upholding the law. Now we're providing police protection to many of our own judges, and only the so-called "liberal media" sees the parallel.

Here's another parallel. Hitler whipped up fear of and rage against the Jews by using slander, lies and intimidation. These so-called Christians are employing the same tactics against the men and women of the American judiciary. Near the end of this disgusting forum, David Gibbs, the lead attorney for Terry Schiavo's parents, stood at the lectern and lied through his teeth:
First, Gibbs suggested that Schiavo fell into a persistent vegetative state not because of an eating disorder but as the result of "some form of strangulation or abuse at the hands of her husband, possibly." Then, Gibbs asserted that after Schiavo's parents were awarded millions of dollars by the state to provide for her care, Michael Schiavo "began moving against the family to kill his wife." These claims, however, did not hold up in court because, as Gibbs explained, "a judge that never went to see [Schiavo] was the judge who made the decision that her life did not matter."
The claims didn't hold up in court because they were flatly untrue. The monetary award was not "millions of dollars" and it was not awarded to Terry's parents. And though it was awarded jointly to Terry and Michael Schiavo, its disposition was not in Michael's hands, but was managed by a trust, over which Micahel had no control whatever. David Gibbs lied, in order to stir up his listeners' anger.

And he succeeded. Max Blumenthal, author of the article in the Nation, writes, "As the conference attendees filed out of the banquet hall and into the rain-flecked night, mostly silent except for the few who were still sobbing, they seemed prepared to do anything--absolutely anything--against judges.":
I approached the chief of staff of Oklahoma's GOP Senator Tom Coburn outside the conference in downtown Washington last Thursday afternoon after he spoke there. Before I could introduce myself, he turned to me and another observer with a crooked smile and exclaimed, "I'm a radical! I'm a real extremist. I don't want to impeach judges. I want to impale them!"
If Michael Schwartz, Coburn's chief of staff, had different ethnic roots and darker skin, he would be called a "terrorist" and locked up in Guantanomo for years, or hustled off to some other country to have his presumed secrets tortured out of him.

Welcome to America, united by fear and anger under men obsessed with power, who will do anything and utter any convenient lie to control us.

WHY 'LIFE AS A SPECTATOR SPORT'

"If you're lucky not to live in the gutters of a slum, but still can't afford to take vacations in the Alps, you're part of that enormous middle class who lives life through the medium of the television, further separated from "real" life by air conditioner, by automobile, by dishwasher, microwave and ice-in-the-door refrigerator, by automatic washer and dryer, and all the other appliances and conveniences that make it possible for America to live life at second hand. I'm not sure why Americans decided that televised drama was better than the real thing, that cardboard microwave food containers were an adequate substitute for real dishes, and their contents for real food, or that cooking, dishwashing and face-to-face conversation wasn't worth the effort and time it required. Someone fed this nation a plastic crate of out-of-season tomatoes and told us it was life and we took them at their word, and we're so much the poorer for it that it's hard to know where to start to list the shortcomings."

I wrote this a couple of years ago, but I have to admit it's much less amusing than I thought it would be to see the artifical construct falling apart.
