Wednesday, April 20, 2005 Must be rough being part of a huge majority . . . 90 percent of cadets at the Air Force Acadamy identify as Christian, but a spokesperson for Focus on the Family says they are being discriminated against.Responses to a survey last May gave Air Force officials what they called "an inkling of a problem." Since then, 55 specific complaints have been received. The complaints are not from Christian cadets, however, but about them. In an aricle in today's LA Times an academy spokesman acknowledged "proselytizing in inappropriate places," as well as "maliciousness, mean-spiritedness and attacking or baiting someone over religion." One Jewish cadet reported that he was called a "filthy Jew" and was accused of being responsible for killing Christ.In response, the Air Force created a 50-minute training program called RSVP, Respecting the Spiritual Values of all People. Initially, only cadets will be required to attend the course, but it will eventually be mandatory for all 9000 academy employees as well.A spokesman for Focus on the Family said, however, didn't agree.Tom Minnery, vice president of public policy at Focus on the Family, denounced any acts of bigotry but said it was Christians who were facing discrimination."If 90% of cadets identify themselves as Christian, it is common sense that Christianity will be in evidence on the campus," he said. "Christianity is deeply felt and very important to people … and to suggest that it should be bottled up is nonsense. I think a witch hunt is underway to root out Christian beliefs. To root out what is pervasive in 90% of the group is ridiculous."Gosh. I really feel for those poor cadets whose training in good manners is being characterized as bottling up or rooting out their faith. I'm not sure why Americans decided that televised drama was better than the real thing, that cardboard microwave food containers were an adequate substitute for real dishes, and their contents for real food, or that cooking, dishwashing and face-to-face conversation wasn't worth the effort and time it required. Someone fed this nation a plastic crate of out-of-season tomatoes and told us it was life and we took them at their word, and we're so much the poorer for it that it's hard to know where to start to list the shortcomings." I wrote this a couple of years ago, but I have to admit it's much less amusing than I thought it would be to see the artifical construct falling apart. WHY 'LIFE AS A SPECTATOR SPORT'
