Friday, October 03, 2008 Sorry for being AWOL Work has been crazy but the real reason I haven't blogged recently is that the company that was hosting my blog site wouldn't allow me access to the site. You could read the files just fine, but I couldn't update the blog. Nor could I access the site with ftp in order to download all the files and transfer them elsewhere. I did finally manage to get access to the site long enough to grab all the files, and I've finally finished transferring them to the new host. Now all my domains are hosted on the same site, the one where my business domain has been for years, and I'm feeling much better about their long-term stability.Even if I hadn't had problems with the domain host, life has been so hectic lately that I wouldn't have been doing much bloggin anyway. Clarence is having TIA's (transient ischemic attacks, or 'mini-strokes'). He spent three days in Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem; they couldn't find anything wrong with him--or at least nothing more wrong than there already was--and sent him home. But he can no longer do anything for himself besides eating, and that requires someone to cut his food for him. He can take a shuffling step or two to transfer from bed to wheelchair, and from wheelchair to car, but he can no longer walk from the bedroom to the car, or even from bed to bathroom. So he can't be left by himself any more at all. I can't even go into town for my Saturday morning knitting group without him. I can't sleep in my own bedroom any more, or sleep through the night. When he gets up to use the bathroom, roughly once an hour, I'm up too. I'm not certain how much longer this can go on.We've been in Richmond for three days, working an out-of-season reauthorization inspection batch. The reauth inspections are normally issued only in the summer, partly to take advantage of the longer daylight hours and partly to minimize the adverse affect of bad weather. For whatever reason, the field offices are spending their new fiscal year funds like there's no tomorrow and they don't have to save any of it for the inspections for new applications. Something odd is going on.More tomorrow, it's been a long long day. posted by Liz @ 9:13 PM | The template is set to display 10 posts. I welcome politely worded comments and email, my spam filter throws the rest away, so don't bother to flame me WHY 'LIFE AS A SPECTATOR SPORT' "If you're lucky not to live in the gutters of a slum, but still can't afford to take vacations in the Alps, you're part of that enormous middle class who lives life through the medium of the television, further separated from "real" life by air conditioner, by automobile, by dishwasher, microwave and ice-in-the-door refrigerator, by automatic washer and dryer, and all the other appliances and conveniences that make it possible for America to live life at second hand. I'm not sure why Americans decided that televised drama was better than the real thing, that cardboard microwave food containers were an adequate substitute for real dishes, and their contents for real food, or that cooking, dishwashing and face-to-face conversation wasn't worth the effort and time it required. Someone fed this nation a plastic crate of out-of-season tomatoes and told us it was life and we took them at their word, and we're so much the poorer for it that it's hard to know where to start to list the shortcomings." I wrote this a couple of years ago, but I have to admit it's much less amusing than I thought it would be to see the artifical construct falling apart.
